Amazon Prime Video taps former NBC anchor Williams for special election day coverage

(Reuters) – Former NBC anchor Brian Williams will host a special one-night show delivering election results and analysis to Amazon.com customers on Nov. 5, the company said on Thursday as it looks to capitalize on one of the most anticipated events of the year.

The show will be produced by Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner of White Cherry Entertainment, who had previously produced Oscar and Golden Globe ceremonies.

“Election Night Live with Brian Williams” will air on election day at 5 pm Eastern Time, Amazon said, and will feature prominent contributors across news and traditional media as guests.

“This non-partisan live special will draw from major news sources and complement the various partner news channels available on Prime Video,” said Albert Cheng, head of Prime Video.

By betting on the lucrative U.S. election, the e-commerce giant is hoping to drive the lion’s share of viewership to its platform, which could attract marketers and ad dollars.

Prime Video offers a variety of news channels for free on the platform including “ABC News Live”, “CNN Headlines” and “NBC News Now”, among others.

Williams’ special will be available in English in most countries where Prime Video is available, irrespective of whether or not the viewers have a Prime membership.

Williams was an NBC News veteran who left in 2021 after spending nearly three decades with the company, covering numerous Olympic Games, seven presidential elections and half a dozen presidents.
